5*- A fantastic tale of adventure!
If you enjoy reading fantasy novels filled with adventure and excitement, then look no further than the novel “Ascendant of Shadows: The Hero of Light” by Thorne Ironheart. This hero’s story is an unforgettable quest filled with magic, mystery and suspense that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Part parable and part adventure fantasy, this story is about one hero’s quest to answer the call in the battle of good versus evil.
Nathan Hale is suddenly cast into a strange world, where he has a strange power. In his mission to understand this power, he meets others who seem to understand more about him than he does. Because Nathan is not of their world, his friends become protective of him, especially after they learn that he is the hero in the old legends foretelling the arrival of someone who will cast their world into either darkness or light. Which path will Nathan ultimately choose as he goes up against the Dark One?
As I read this story, I couldn’t help but think that even though this is fantasy, it strikes me as a parable of sorts. A war against the darkness, using light within as a weapon. Nathan is cursed with a dark mark on his heart because of a shade that attacked him. Even so, with druids, dwarves, an orc and elves, I was reminded that this is indeed a fantasy story, so I kept my perception of it as such as I continued reading.
They don’t call it a “hero’s journey” for nothing! Nathan enters this strange world as an ordinary human, and the experiences he has on his journey are what shaped him into the hero that he is meant to be. What is interesting, however, is that no matter how much of an urgency he has to get to his destination, he keeps giving in to distractions along the way. Even if these distractions are dangerous and/or can hamper his efforts to stay true to himself as he fights evil with his new powers. It seems like the Dark One throws a lot at him during his journey.
All the same, I enjoyed reading about this journey. Readers of this book are not provided with a map of this world at the beginning of the ebook, but the author’s writing about it is sufficient. It may not create a map, but it is “map” enough for the reader to get a good idea of the layout of this land and this world. Ironheart takes the time to describe each village/town/city the characters arrive at, what it’s like in one area in particular, along with the people living there. I also appreciated that we got to know what kind of governance there was in each of the areas.
Further into the story, though, I noticed a shift which took place with Nathan. He goes through more hardship, and this ultimately helps him to grow, learn, and mature into the type of hero that only he can be. As he tells a character on page 183,
"I hope to be the type of man that can extend mercy and grace when they are needed."
In other words, this heroic character grows and matures just as all main characters should in a story. Nathan does not start out in the story wise and mature; this comes to him as he goes through harsh experiences along his journey. Just as it would happen to anyone in real life. Except here we have a fantasy story, and in it we are treated to an unforgettable and entertaining tale of adventure, magic and inspiration.
Thorne Ironheart’s “Ascendant of Shadows” is an entertaining fantasy novel full of adventure and excitement. Readers who enjoy fantasy are in for a real treat with this book, which delves into another world gripped by dark forces that has an unlikely hero ready to fight for what is right.
